Newquay has gone through something of a facelift in recent years, and while the town centre is still a magnet for stag and hen do’s from across the country, there are some real gems for those looking for a decent meal out.
One of these is The Bullpit, a self-proclaimed smokehouse serving bbq food inspired by the southern states of the USA. Since discovering their spicy sausage links at a food festival last year, we’ve been back three or four times to feast on ribs, steak, chicken, sausages, pulled pork, beef brisket, and all the sides! Needless to say, it’s not one for herbivores (though their veggie burgers do look delicious) and you definitely need to be hungry when you order. We arrived after a day spent surfing, worn out and aching and in dire need of a feast…
The Bullpit is split into a downstairs bar and an upstairs restaurant, with stunning views out over the sea. The Wild Wild West theme has been taken to heart, with bison heads mounted on the walls (not real, I presume), a stunning chandelier made out of antlers and even the bar stools are in character, with their arm rests in the style of shotguns!
On this occasion, the three of us shared two starters of the sliders and bbq wings. For the sliders we chose pulled pork, beef brisket and chicken, and all three mini burgers were fantastic and just the right amount. The wings had some heat behind them and were coated in a generous serving of sauce. (We were slightly disappointed to see a waitress topping up the table bbq sauce bottles from a giant tub of HP BBQ sauce, but hopefully what came out of the kitchen hadn’t come from a bottle…)
Mains are very reasonably priced and two of us went for the two meat combo, getting an 8oz rump steak and full rack of ribs, along with two sides (sweet potato fries and onion rings for her, corn and bbq beans for me) for £17.95. P went for a rather lackluster cheeseburger, which was acceptable and tasty enough, but disappointing compared to other parts of the menu. The servings of ribs were so generous we brought back nearly a full rack between us, and unfortunately didn’t have any room to try the puddings!
The Bullpit has quickly become a firm favourite in our household, with delicious food for good prices, and excellent customer service in a lovely setting. Highly recommend to anyone in the area, and definitely somewhere we’ll be bringing all of our visitors.
